Update January 2014
Taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) can generate considerable revenue for states, cities, and the nation. This calculator, which was revised in January of 2014, produces expected revenue from a penny-per-ounce tax on SSBs by beverage type, state, city and year (2013-2017).
Researchers used the most recently available public and proprietary data on beverage consumption, population, pricing, as well as socio-demographic information on the variation in SSB consumption to populate the updated calculator. The methodology of the calculator is described in detail here.
The calculator was developed and updated in collaboration with Frank J. Chaloupka, PhD, Professor of Economics, University of Illinois at Chicago and Lisa Powell, PhD, Professor of Health Policy and Administration, University of Illinois at Chicago. For more information, email Tatiana Andreyeva, PhD, Rudd Center Director of Economic Initiatives.
Funding for proprietary data and updating the calculator has been provided in part by the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (1R01CA172814-01A1), and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Healthy Eating Research and Bridging the Gap programs.
